Athenaeum Center Theatre presents

Antigone

March 7-April 6, 2025

About the Show

The most beautiful thing offered to humans is our capacity to love, and the most difficult? Loyalty to God in the face of human opposition—a relevant topic today, as the two are increasingly at odds. Human nature doesn’t change however, and over 2,500 years ago, we see in this story a young woman of Thebes facing the same challenge.

Antigone. Her uncle, Creon, decrees that her brother, Polynices, who died attacking Thebes, must remain unburied outside the city gates as punishment for his betrayal. Faced with this unjust law, she stands in a moral dilemma: does she defy the edict and bury him—honoring her conscience and the law of the gods—or does she submit to the will of the State?

Going to her brother’s body, outside the confines of the civic community, her act of defiance sets off a chain of tragic events, culminating not only in her death, but the death of several others close to the King. Through Antigone’s courage and Creon’s inflexibility, we see the results of unwavering adherence to the rule of law and the personal cost of choosing loyalty to one’s own conscience and the law of the Gods.

With a novel production that intersperses visuals and music to fully immerse the audience in this story, one that will inspire us in the face of complexities, to choose love.

Dante 360

Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost.”

And so we all begin—in darkness.

Join Dante on his most famous journey through the depths of hell, levels upon levels of purgatory, finally discovering the light and glory of paradise. You will find terror in the wild beasts he meets along the way; and only moments later great hope at the strong woman, Beatrice, who leads him always upwards.

This contemporary staged performances of one of the most epic stories of the western world is an immersive, multi-dimensional production that leads you into Dantes universe. Returning to the stage for the 4th year, this year’s production.

Its heaven. It’s hell. But above all, it’s worth the trip.
