Lighting the Way to Beauty
This season, we invite you to follow the light.
At Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture, Fall 2026 unfolds as a journey shaped by mentorship, mercy, and courageous guidance. Together, we enter stories where unlikely companions walk beside us, where steadfast witnesses illuminate the dark, and where loss becomes the threshold of renewal.
Each production this season reveals how art can guide us toward wholeness.
How beauty, when faithfully rendered, becomes a light strong enough to lead.
These are works about guidance:
A poet led through shadow into glory
A desperate man shown the radiance of his own life
A writer reflecting on vocation and the responsibility of the artist
A cinematic tribute to courage, memory, and legacy
Together, they form a season not merely of performances, but of pilgrimage.
Join us at Chicago’s historic Athenaeum Center, where thought meets performance, and beauty lights the way.
Dante 360
At the edge of the abyss stands a poet, and a guide. With Virgil leading the way, we descend through the circles of Hell and climb the terraces of Purgatory, where justice and mercy shape every step. Fierce and protective, he brings us to the threshold of Paradise, where reason gives way to revelation.
In its fifth staging at Athenaeum Center, this bold multimedia production reveals The Divine Comedy as vivid and immediate: a living journey through shadow toward radiance.

It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play
Even the smallest light can outshine the longest night. When one desperate man stands at the edge, a gentle guide named Clarence reveals the unseen grace of a life woven into an entire town.
Returning for its fourth holiday season, this cherished production is staged as a 1940s live radio broadcast — complete with vintage microphones, live foley effects, and the warmth of shared tradition. George Bailey’s story reminds us that belonging is not earned through greatness, but discovered in love.

Strictly Chicago:
Concert Series
Ongoing
What can performances from homegrown musicians tell us about the soul of a city?
In this concert series, Chicago artists return to the sounds that formed them and offer them anew. Rooted in neighborhoods, traditions, and lived experience, these performances reflect the music that has shaped the city’s creative life.
Through rhythm and voice, these artists serve as guides. Their work helps light the path toward a beauty that restores and unites, revealing how a city’s story can draw us beyond ourselves and into deeper belonging.
Dana Gioia
on Poetry
October 16-18, 2026
What forms a writer? What sustains a calling?
Acclaimed poet and former California Poet Laureate Dana Gioia reads from his work and reflects on the poems that shaped his life and vocation. In dialogue with award-winning author Joshua Hren, he explores Dante’s enduring influence and the responsibility of the Catholic writer today.
A member of our advisory committee, Gioia has played an instrumental role in shaping the artistic vision of Athenaeum Center.
This special engagement serves as a literary prelude to Dante 360.

Art That Guides. Beauty That Leads.
We present work that deepens attention and offers guidance through story, music, and conversation. We believe beauty, rooted in truth, forms both imagination and culture.
This fall’s season gives that conviction concrete shape. In Dante 360, we journey through shadow toward revelation under the steady guidance of Virgil. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play reminds us that even the smallest light can restore hope and belonging. Together, these works reflect our commitment to thoughtful engagement and cultural renewal. They invite us to listen carefully, think seriously, and walk with guides who lead us toward what endures.
Join us this fall as we continue lighting the path toward beauty.
“We believe beauty teaches us to pay attention.
Each work on our stage is not a conclusion, but a carefully offered question.
It lingers, unsettles, and gently forms the soul.”
Lawrence Daufenbach, Executive Director
