A Note from the creator of Dante 360

Welcome to the Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture.

You are currently sitting in our Historic Main Stage Theatre, originally built in 1911. As you look up to the top of our proscenium, you will see a wonderful depiction of Dante and Beatrice from The Divine Comedy. This medallion centerpiece was much of my inspiration for creating the show.

Dante’s work and the philosophical underpinnings of The Divine Comedyhave made a profound contribution to modern thought and culture, though most of us don’t realize that. I wanted to find a way to pay homage to Dante, and make the text more accessible to a contemporary audience.

November is a month in the Catholic tradition that we remember those who came before us. Today we remember those who originally built this space, and carry on the legacy of Dante Alghieri.

Thank you for being here. Please enjoy the show. I hope to see you in the Paradiso after the show!

Cheers,

Lawrence Daufenbach

Founder & Executive Director

Director’s Note

Dante 360 is a unique blend of personal story, narration, dramatization, and exquisite music—all drawn from a masterpiece of poetic composition, The Divine Comedy.

True to Dante’s goal of offering his poetic work as a path to redemption through immersion in beauty, the Athenaeum’s signature production strives to enrich our experience of the meaning of life and our journey through it with a spiritual depth of compelling hope and beauty.

We are grateful to you for coming to celebrate beauty with us! We invite all of you to become more immersed in our vision and community at the Athenaeum. Help us to multiply shared encounters with beauty that can transform our world and fill it with joy and hope by donating to “360” immersive events like this.

Dante 360

Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost.”

And so we all begin—in darkness.

Join Dante on his most famous journey through the depths of hell, levels upon levels of purgatory, finally discovering the light and glory of paradise. You will find terror in the wild beasts he meets along the way; and only moments later great hope at the strong woman, Beatrice, who leads him always upwards.

This contemporary staged performances of one of the most epic stories of the western world is an immersive, multi-dimensional production that leads you into Dantes universe. Returning to the stage for the 4th year, this year’s production.

Its heaven. It’s hell. But above all, it’s worth the trip.
