Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture presents

Entangled Beauty Art Exhibit: Shanthi Chandrasekar and Julian Voss-Andreae

September 12–November 2, 2025

About the Show

We are proud to present the Shanthi Chandrasekar’s Singularities & Infinities Chicago debut as part of our ongoing Entangled Beauty: Conversations on Quantum Science series, which includes academic presentations, film screenings, theatrical performances, and thematically-connected art exhibits.

The Shanthi Chandrasekar Singularities & Infinities exhibit embodies the spirit of Entangled Beauty by translating the abstract concepts of quantum mechanics and cosmology into intricate visual forms. Inspired by thought experiments about black holes, multiverses, and the origins of the cosmos, her work invites viewers to consider how scientific discoveries reshape our imagination. Through detailed drawings, layered materials, and evocative symbolism, Chandrasekar opens new ways of seeing complexity, pattern, and hidden order in the universe—making her art a natural complement to Entangled Beauty’s performances, presentations, and conversations.

Artwork from Shanthi Chandrasekar’s Singularities & Infinities Chicago debut art exhibit will be available for viewing in our Paradiso ballroom. The pieces will also be available for purchase, with more information to come. Please RSVP for gallery hours, or stop by to view the work on your own schedule. Visitors are encouraged to check in at the box office upon arrival.

Chandrasekar is a Maryland-based multimedia and multidisciplinary artist with an academic background in physics and psychology, as well as training in traditional Indian art forms such as Kolam and Tanjore painting. Her practice is fueled by curiosity and shaped by both cultural heritage and scientific inquiry. While many of her works draw from Indian traditions, her deepest inspiration comes from the mystery and majesty of the universe—where the scientific overlaps with the spiritual.

Her art has been recognized with numerous awards, including Independent Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council and Individual Artist Grants from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County. She has exhibited widely at institutions including the Smithsonian, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Gandhi Memorial Center, and the American University’s Katzen Arts Center. Chandrasekar’s works are also held in the DC Art Bank, Montgomery Public Art, and several hospital and private collections.

Through the Singularities & Infinities series, Chandrasekar continues her lifelong exploration of the unknown, creating contemplative works that challenge our understanding of reality while celebrating beauty, interconnectedness, and wonder.

Artist Statement

Curiosity has been my driving force, leading me to ask questions about everything around me. This has led to my constant exploration and experimentation of ideas based on scientific and philosophical enquiry. Combining scientific facts and theories with my wild imagination has been fruitful in creating artwork that questions our known reality and seeks to learn more about the unknown. My educational background in physics and psychology, along with my love for nature, cultural and philosophical traditions serve as my muse. My working method also varies from highly planned beginnings to random mark making and unexpected path changers along the way. This combination of both planned and free flow approach leads to new possibilities and new directions, thus keeping me constantly excited about my work. Making art is a thought provoking, contemplative and meditative process for me.

Abstract concepts in physics, especially in relativity and quantum mechanics, have fascinated me since high school and college. I would indulge in thought experiments and daydream about various scenarios at all scales, sometimes imagining myself to be particles journeying at enormous speeds through the cosmos or an observer witnessing the multiverses where different sets of physics rules operate. The Singularities & Infinities series resulted from one of these fantastical journeys of my mind as I was imagining myself moving through a black hole towards an infinitely dense singularity where all known physics breaks down. I wanted to explore the concepts relating to the cosmos that defy common sense, yet the universe operates because of them.

In this exhibition, I have included drawings and paintings that were inspired by quantum mechanics. The drawings were made using pens of various nib sizes, thin brushes and colored ink on printmaking paper in order to achieve the intricate details. The white lines in the artwork are the white of the paper as I work in the negative spaces to create a sense of depth and also to bring out the idea of interconnectedness. The circular format is reminiscent of the eyepieces of microscopes and telescopes seeking to perceive the invisible. The Journeys- Scales piece is a collage of layers of fabric, glass beads and white thread exploring the  ideas of order, chaos and randomness along with the fractal nature of the cosmos at different scales. The formation of atoms in the early stages of the universe leading to bubbles of matter is addressed in the Cosmic Vibrations- Blue Shift painting in which time is represented by the dark blue spiral, drawn freehand using a brush. The two paintings from the Graphs series, Early Universe and The Ultraviolet Catastrophe touch upon the history, discovery and significance of quantum mechanics.

Entangled Beauty

Entangled Beauty is a season-long exploration of quantum science and its intersections with philosophy, art, and the human spirit. Presented in recognition of the United Nations’ International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, the program invites audiences to engage with leading scientists, thinkers, and artists through talks, performances, and screenings that illuminate the wonder and complexity of the quantum world. Set in Chicago at Athenaeum Center, the series reflects on how groundbreaking discoveries reveal new dimensions of beauty, meaning, and interconnectedness in our universe.

Dante 360

Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost.”

And so we all begin—in darkness.

Join Dante on his most famous journey through the depths of hell, levels upon levels of purgatory, finally discovering the light and glory of paradise. You will find terror in the wild beasts he meets along the way; and only moments later great hope at the strong woman, Beatrice, who leads him always upwards.

This contemporary staged performances of one of the most epic stories of the western world is an immersive, multi-dimensional production that leads you into Dantes universe. Returning to the stage for the 4th year, this year’s production.

Its heaven. It’s hell. But above all, it’s worth the trip.
