About the Show

Step into a weekend of discovery at Athenaeum Center with Entangled Beauty: Conversations on Quantum Science. This immersive gathering brings together leading scientists, artists, and thinkers to explore how quantum ideas shape our understanding of reality, meaning, and beauty through thought-provoking talks, live performances, and cinematic experiences.

Across the weekend, you’ll encounter an inspiring mix of experiences: conversations on quantum science and philosophy, glimpses into the upcoming production of Constellations, a main stage screening of Oppenheimer, live dance inspired by the quantum realm, and even a dash of comedy that makes complex ideas accessible. Together, these offerings invite you to see the world and your place within it through a new lens of wonder and connection.

Program Highlights

The Entangled Beauty conference brings together leading voices in science, philosophy, and the arts for a weekend of talks, performances, film, and visual art. Ticket holders have access to all these aspects of the program:

  • Live Talks & Conversations — Featuring physicist Stephen Barr, priest–astrophysicist Fr. John Kartje, and Loyola professor Constantin Rasinariu, offering accessible insights into quantum mysteries and their philosophical and spiritual implications.
  • Beyond Reality: Quantum Artistry — Choreographer Sandra Kaufmann joins with physicist Constantin Rasinariu for an interdisciplinary performance blending dance, science, and multimedia.
  • Uncontrolled Variables — Chicago’s science-meets-comedy troupe, where comedians and scientists swap roles to make complex research both hilarious and illuminating.
  • Constellations — A sneak peek of Athenaeum Center Theatre’s fall 2025 production, exploring love and fate through the lens of multiverse theory.
  • Oppenheimer — Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-winning portrait of J. Robert Oppenheimer.
  • Art ExhibitsSingularities & Infinities by Shanthi Chandrasekar and Quantum Figures by Julian Voss-Andreae, two visual art installations inspired by the mysteries of quantum science.

Sandra Kaufmann — Beyond Reality: Quantum Artistry

Sandra Kaufmann, founding director of Loyola University Chicago’s Dance program, is a celebrated dancer, director, and educator who has toured internationally with the Martha Graham Dance Company and choreographed for stages across the country. Her work spans concert dance, opera, site-specific works, and interdisciplinary collaborations, often exploring the intersection of science and the arts. She has received awards from the Dance Magazine Foundation, the Sloan Science and Technology Fund, and was invited by the Library of Congress to curate and perform The Legacy of the New Dance Group.

Beyond Reality: Quantum Artistry is an immersive program that uses dance, conversation, and multimedia to explore how subatomic forces give rise to our physical reality. With physicist Constantin Rasinariu, visuals by Kelli Evans, and text by playwright Michael Bassett, the piece invites audiences to experience quantum beauty through movement, imagination, and collaboration.

Stephen M. Barr — Quantum Physics and Ancient Faith

Stephen Barr is Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Delaware, where his research focused on grand unified theories, cosmology, and particle physics. A Fellow of the American Physical Society, he is also the founding president of the Society of Catholic Scientists. He is widely published in both scientific and public forums, including First Things and The Wall Street Journal, and is the author of Modern Physics and Ancient Faith.

In this presentation, Prof. Barr unpacks the strangeness of quantum mechanics and its implications for how we understand mind, matter, and meaning. From the uncertainty principle to Schrödinger’s cat, he explores how physics challenges—and enriches—our philosophical and theological perspectives.

Constantin Rasinariu — Quantum Science Basics for Non-Scientists

Dr. Constantin Rasinariu, professor of physics at Loyola University Chicago, specializes in supersymmetric quantum mechanics, relativity, and probability theory. An award-winning educator, he makes abstract scientific concepts accessible and engaging.

In his talk, he introduces core ideas like superposition, entanglement, and wave-particle duality, showing how they not only reshape our understanding of reality but also power the technologies that define modern life, from semiconductors to quantum computing.

Fr. John Kartje — Peering Inside Schrödinger’s Chapel

Fr. Kartje is a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago and Rector of Mundelein Seminary. With doctorates in astrophysics and biblical studies, he bridges theology and science with rare insight.

In this presentation, he reflects on what quantum physics can teach us about discernment, prayer, and mystery in faith. Just as quantum science reveals the paradoxes at the heart of reality, spirituality invites us into the paradoxes of divine presence and human freedom.

Uncontrolled Variables — Science Meets Comedy

Chicago’s monthly science-comedy troupe, Uncontrolled Variables, flips the script on research presentations: comedians present the data first, and the scientists follow to set the record straight. The result is a fast-paced, funny, and surprisingly insightful look at real science.

At Entangled Beauty, they’ll bring their signature wit to the mysteries of quantum physics.

Art Exhibits

Shanthi Chandrasekar: Singularities & Infinities
Chandrasekar, a Maryland-based multimedia artist with training in both physics and psychology, translates quantum and cosmological concepts into intricate visual works. Inspired by black holes, multiverses, and the origins of the cosmos, her drawings and layered materials create contemplative visions of order and complexity. Her art has been shown at the Smithsonian and Fermilab, and now debuts in Chicago at the Athenaeum Center.

Julian Voss-Andreae: Quantum Figures
A physicist-turned-sculptor, Voss-Andreae creates works that reveal and conceal themselves depending on the angle of view. His sculptures Sitting Man and Quantum Buddha embody quantum paradoxes in physical form. His writings and talks explore how science informs his artistic practice, and he will return to the Athenaeum Center this fall to share his reflections.

Dante 360

Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost.”

And so we all begin—in darkness.

Join Dante on his most famous journey through the depths of hell, levels upon levels of purgatory, finally discovering the light and glory of paradise. You will find terror in the wild beasts he meets along the way; and only moments later great hope at the strong woman, Beatrice, who leads him always upwards.

This contemporary staged performances of one of the most epic stories of the western world is an immersive, multi-dimensional production that leads you into Dantes universe. Returning to the stage for the 4th year, this year’s production.

Its heaven. It’s hell. But above all, it’s worth the trip.
