Strictly Chicago Series: Half Gringa

About the Show

Over the course of her first two full-length releases as Half Gringa, Chicago-based singer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Isabel Olive has demonstrated stunning emotional intelligence and songwriting elegance. Her 2025 full-length release, Cosmovisión, captures Olive at her most self-possessed, addressing “mythology, mortality, and everything in between.”

Indeed, Half Gringa seems to revel in addressing what cannot be grasped or expressed so easily. She commonly switches between English and Spanish in her songs. It’s a tribute –– as is the band name –– to her upbringing by a Venezuelan mother and an American father in a Midwestern town. This record is distinctly Half Gringa because it is only Olive who stands in front of these particular ancestors, who wields this particular perspective and experience, this particular “cosmovisión.”

The Chicago Reader named Half Gringa’s debut, Gruñona as among Chicago’s Best Albums of the Decade while VICE named her sophomore full-length, Force to Reckon as one of 22 Essential Albums of 2020. She has supported artists Iron & Wine, Television, Sarah Shook & the Disarmers, Flaming Lips, Madi Diaz, and more.

In Conversation with Half Gringa

Ahead of her Paradiso performance, Chicago songwriter Isabel Olive reflects on the questions shaping Cosmovisión, the joy of building songs live, and the collaborative spirit of playing in a room full of people. In this interview, Olive speaks candidly about making work slowly, staying open to uncertainty, and finding creative grounding in Chicago. Read the full conversation for a deeper look at the ideas, process, and perspective behind the music. At Home in Chicago: Half Gringa Opens the Strictly Chicago Series 2026

Dante 360

Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost.”

And so we all begin—in darkness.

Join Dante on his most famous journey through the depths of hell, levels upon levels of purgatory, finally discovering the light and glory of paradise. You will find terror in the wild beasts he meets along the way; and only moments later great hope at the strong woman, Beatrice, who leads him always upwards.

This contemporary staged performances of one of the most epic stories of the western world is an immersive, multi-dimensional production that leads you into Dantes universe. Returning to the stage for the 4th year, this year’s production.

Its heaven. It’s hell. But above all, it’s worth the trip.
