The second event in the Eighth Blackbird Artist-in-Residence Concerts will feature Composition as Explanation, a visionary piece by Grammy-nominated composer David Lang. Directed by the legendary Anne Bogart, this performance blends music, theater, and philosophy, inspired by Gertrude Stein’s essay of the same name.
Eighth Blackbird has long been a pioneer in combining classical music with theatrical performance. In Composition as Explanation, the sextet once again pushes the boundaries of “Super Chamber Music,” an experimental genre coined by Lang himself. The work explores the repetitive, circular language of Stein’s writing through a dynamic interplay of music, acting, lighting, and staging. The result is an innovative work that challenges the way we engage with art, creating layers of meaning and inviting audiences to experience art not as intellectual consumption but as a deeply felt, intuitive encounter.
