Support Mother’s Farewell

The Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture is excited to be in the development phase and with your support bring Mother’s Farewell to the stage—an original play, written by Siobhan Fallon Hogan (SNL, Seinfield, Men in Black), that tenderly explores family, faith, memory, and the beauty that can emerge in life’s most fragile moments. Recently featured in a table read at the Napa Institute Arts Festival, this moving new work continues to resonate deeply with audiences for its emotional honesty and spiritual depth.

Set within the quiet intimacy of a family home, Mother’s Farewell invites audiences to contemplate love, forgiveness, and the eternal dignity of every human life. The Athenaeum Center seeks to produce this piece with the same artistic integrity and reverence that defines all of our work—uniting world-class Chicago talent with our mission to revitalize the great Catholic tradition of the arts.

To bring this production to life, we aim to raise $500,000, supporting artists, scenic design, lighting, costumes, and outreach that will allow Mother’s Farewell to reach and move thousands. Every contribution—large or small—helps make this encounter with Beauty possible.

About the Show

Mother’s Farewell is the story of Jane Fallon, 97, and the last day she spends surrounded by her daughters, sister, and granddaughter — a fiercely loving and hilariously dysfunctional Irish Catholic family. It’s a heartfelt comedy filled with rosaries, wine, fights, laughter, prayer, and more wine — capturing the chaos, devotion, and grace that define family life at its most human.

As the women gather to care for their mother, long-held tensions bubble to the surface, faith is tested, and memories give way to moments of deep connection. What begins as an ordinary day becomes an encounter with love, forgiveness, and the mysterious beauty of letting go.

Both uproariously funny and profoundly moving, Mother’s Farewell speaks to a universal truth: one day, we all face the last goodbye.

Written by and starring Siobhan Fallon Hogan (Men in Black, Seinfeld, SNL), the play features a star-studded ensemble of celebrated actresses including Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond), Laila Robins (Walking Dead, Tony-nominated Broadway veteran), Margaret Colin (Broadway veteran, Independence Day, Gossip Girl), Welker White (The Irishman), and newcomer Sinead Hogan (Shelter in Solitude).

With its blend of wit, faith, and heart, Mother’s Farewell is destined to be an instant favorite — a story that reminds us, with laughter and tears, that even in farewell, love endures.

Critical Praise

“I equally laughed and teared up during the performance of Siobhan’s heartfelt and humor-filled play. Injecting a dose of faith in only the way she can, hers is a story that captures the heart and soul of a family while making you feel like you’re part of hers.”
— Laura Carrione, Fox News
“The characters in this play are fantastic, I was laughing the entire time, and the central family dynamics grounded the piece in a way that surprised and moved me. Definitely go see it!”
— Katie North, Tony-Nominated Broadway Producer
“Mother’s Farewell made laugh so hard I was embarrassed and then I began crying and I couldn’t tell if it was because I was laughing so hard or just overwhelmed by emotions. The cast was unbelievably perfect and Siobhan Fallon Hogan was spectacular. I’m a huge fan!”
— Dan Peate, Peate Ventures

Dante 360

Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward pathway had been lost.”

And so we all begin—in darkness.

Join Dante on his most famous journey through the depths of hell, levels upon levels of purgatory, finally discovering the light and glory of paradise. You will find terror in the wild beasts he meets along the way; and only moments later great hope at the strong woman, Beatrice, who leads him always upwards.

This contemporary staged performances of one of the most epic stories of the western world is an immersive, multi-dimensional production that leads you into Dantes universe. Returning to the stage for the 4th year, this year’s production.

Its heaven. It’s hell. But above all, it’s worth the trip.
