Bernadette, The Musical Program

The show will run for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, with a 15-minute intermission

Producers' Note

We are deeply grateful to welcome you tonight to this new production of Bernadette, The Musical.

Since its debut in Lourdes, France, in 2019, this show has touched the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people. We are thrilled to finally bring this wonderful story to a U.S. audience.

At its core, Bernadette tells the story of a young girl who chooses truth over comfort, conscience over fear, and faith over conformity. In a world quick to judge and slow to listen, Bernadette Soubirous reminds us of the quiet strength that comes from simply bearing witness: “I was asked to tell you, not to convince you.”

This story feels particularly vital in our times. Bernadette’s journey speaks to universal themes: dignity, courage, perseverance, and the power of a single voice—even that of a thirteen-year-old girl—to transform the world.

As a musical for all generations, Bernadette invites audiences to be moved, uplifted, and inspired—not by spectacle alone, but by sincerity and hope.

Thank you for being part of this adventure and for allowing this story to resonate anew, here in Chicago.

With gratitude,

Pierre Ferragu, Lead Producer
Kelsey Grammer, Lead Producer

A Note from the Executive Director

Thank you for joining us as we conclude our 2025–2026 Season with the U.S. premiere of Bernadette, The Musical. Bringing Bernadette’s story to Chicago reflects our mission to create a place where people encounter beauty in community and are inspired to seek answers to life’s deepest questions.

We believe that beauty moves the whole human person. It connects us with one another, enlarges the imagination, and draws us toward what is good, true, and enduring. Bernadette embodies these aims with rare clarity. In it, we witness one girl’s encounter with beauty and her unshakable conviction transform not only her own life, but the life of an entire community. Her compelling story has resonated across generations and invites renewed attention to conscience, dignity, and faithfulness lived with courage.

We are also pleased to present The Art of Bernadette’s World, our accompanying gallery exhibition on view in the Paradiso and Gallery Hall. This exhibition extends the work beyond the stage, placing it in dialogue with visual art and music that shaped Bernadette’s world, and reflecting our belief that the arts flourish most fully when experienced together.

We are pleased to welcome you this evening, and we look forward to hosting you and your family at many performances to come.

Cheers,

Lawrence Daufenbach
Executive Director, Athenaeum Center for Thought & Culture

Introduction to Bernadette

Lourdes, south of France, 1858. Bernadette is fourteen years old…or maybe thirteen. She is not too sure. She is young, too poor to go to school, and sick. It makes it easy to dismiss her.

She returns from a grim grotto on the river bank, saying she saw something – or someone – she called “Aquero” in the local dialect. She tells only her friends and siblings, but the news spreads like wildfire through the small town.

Questions follow. Doubt hardens. She is only a child. Surely she is mistaken. Surely she is lying. Surely she is dreaming.

She is questioned first by her parents, then by neighbors and passers-by, by the parish priest Father Peyramale, and finally by Police Commissioner Jacomet, who is determined to prove the girl wrong. All search for a flaw, a contradiction, a reason to put an end to the turmoil and move on.

Bernadette does not try to explain what she saw, what she heard, and what she felt. She doesn’t try to convince, but stands her ground, unafraid and steadfast. “I fear nothing, for I have always told the truth. I was asked to tell you, not to convince you.

The crowds swell. So does the tension. Believers hope. Sceptics mock. Is she telling the truth? Is she lying? The authorities grow uneasy and want to stop the thousands now flocking to the grotto.

At the center of it all stands a girl who never asked to be there. Her quiet but unyielding steadfastness unsettles everyone. From her simple testimony something far greater grows: crowds, conflict, belief, fear—until the story no longer belongs to her alone, shaping a town, moving a people, and drawing millions to Lourdes each year in search of healing, truth, and hope.

And so we all begin—in darkness.

Join Dante on his most famous journey through the depths of hell, levels upon levels of purgatory, finally discovering the light and glory of paradise. You will find terror in the wild beasts he meets along the way; and only moments later great hope at the strong woman, Beatrice, who leads him always upwards.

This contemporary staged performances of one of the most epic stories of the western world is an immersive, multi-dimensional production that leads you into Dantes universe. Returning to the stage for the 4th year, this year’s production.
